“With a sea view”
Public art exhibition in the city of Agios Nikolaos, Crete
Curated by Theofilos Tramboulis, Eleni Koukou
Five photos printed in transparent plexiglass, five popular ways to look at the sea. Some dating back to the 19th century, others to the last decade. A typical fishing setting by Konstantinos Volanakis, a 19th century painter from Rethymnon who introduced thalassography into Greek painting. A work by Katsushika Hokusai, great 19th century Japanese painter and leading figure of Ukiyo-e (pictures of the floating world). A Naive painting, probably a work by an aunt-amateur painter, which was passed on to Svoronou. A photo by the artist herself of the life in a seaside resort which could be anywhere in northern Crete. A photo by Eirini Vourloumis of the refugee flows in the Aegean Sea. Five glances at the sea mediating our own glance at the sea.
